African stories have often been framed by a single narrative one that emphasizes power imbalances and positions communities as unfortunate or helpless. It strips them of agency and dignity, and of the possibility of being seen as true contributors to positive change.
Hekaya Creatives specializes in uncovering the agency, resilience, and brilliance inherent in our communities. We believe telling a story with dignity is a strategic choice.
We build a relationship with the protagonists before filming or interviewing to build rapport and deeply understand their background and context.
We ensure we get informed consent, respecting our protagonists' boundaries.
We ensure our protagonists are empowered to tell their own stories rather than being reduced to objects of pity or stereotypes.
Every element of our storytelling focuses on resilience, innovation, and active steps protagonists take.
We measure success not just in views, likes, or shares, but in lives positively changed.
We work within communities to surface authentic voices and honour local traditions.
We invest in modern production techniques to meet the highest global standards.
